Why Your AC Runs All Day But Still Doesn’t Cool

If your AC runs all day but still does not cool the house, something is wrong.

It may be simple. It may be serious. But it should not be dismissed as “just Arizona heat” without a proper look.

In Phoenix and Scottsdale, we do get brutal summer conditions. Long run times are normal during extreme heat. But there is a difference between an AC working hard to maintain temperature and an AC running nonstop while the temperature inside keeps climbing.

That difference matters.

If your air conditioner used to cool the house fine and now it does not, the issue is usually not poor insulation, undersized equipment, or “it’s just hot outside.” Those problems are usually ongoing. They do not appear overnight.

A sudden cooling problem usually points toward an equipment failure, airflow problem, refrigerant issue, thermostat problem, electrical issue, or safety switch shutting the system down.

Start With This Question: Is This New or Ongoing?

Before assuming the worst, think about when the problem started.

Ask yourself:

  • Did this start today?
  • Has the system always struggled?
  • Is this a constant issue or does it happen sometimes?
  • Does the AC normally cool the house down with no problem?
  • What temperature are you trying to reach?
  • Is the thermostat temperature going down, holding steady, or going up?

This helps separate a sudden AC repair issue from a long term comfort problem.

If your AC usually cools fine but suddenly runs all day and does not cool, we usually look first at the equipment. Something may have failed or stopped operating correctly.

If your system has always struggled, especially in certain rooms, the issue may be bigger than the unit itself. It could involve ductwork, return air, insulation, system sizing, attic heat, or poor airflow design.

Those are two different problems. They should not be diagnosed the same way.

Common Reasons an AC Runs All Day But Does Not Cool

An AC running constantly but not cooling is a symptom, not a diagnosis.

There is no single answer that fits every home. The system needs to be checked.

Common causes include:

  • Dirty air filter
  • Restrictive filter
  • Tripped breaker
  • Blown capacitor
  • Failed condenser fan motor
  • Overheated motor
  • Low refrigerant charge
  • Refrigerant leak
  • Frozen evaporator coil
  • Dirty evaporator coil
  • Dirty condenser coil
  • Weak or failed blower motor
  • Thermostat issue
  • Bad compressor
  • Tripped condensate safety switch
  • Ductwork problem

  • Undersized ductwork

Some of these are simple AC repairs. Some are more serious. Some may even lead to a repair versus replacement conversation.

That is why guessing is dangerous.

A dirty filter and a bad compressor can both leave you with a house that is not cooling. The symptom may feel similar, but the repair is very different.

What to Check Before Calling for AC Repair

There are a few safe things homeowners can check before scheduling AC repair. You do not need tools. You do not need to open panels. You do not need to touch electrical components.

Just observe.

Check the Thermostat

Start at the thermostat.

Make sure:

  • It is set to cool.
  • The set temperature is lower than the indoor temperature.
  • The thermostat says it is calling for cooling.
  • There are no alerts or error messages.
  • The thermostat display looks normal.

Also understand this: setting the thermostat to 62 degrees will not make the AC cool faster. Your home AC is not like your car AC. It does not blow colder because you set the number lower. It just runs longer.

If the house is 87 degrees inside and you set the thermostat to 62, the system still has to pull the house down one degree at a time.

Check the Air Filter

Next, check the filter.

Ask yourself when it was last replaced. Then look at it. If it is dirty, clogged, or you are not sure, replace it.

Dirty filters are one of the leading causes of HVAC problems in Phoenix and Scottsdale. Many homeowners also use filters that are too restrictive for their system. They think a high-MERV pleated filter will help with allergies or protect the equipment better, but it can create airflow problems if the system is not designed for it.

A filter that is too dirty or too restrictive can cause the system to freeze, overheat, lose capacity, or run much longer than it should.

Check Airflow Inside the Home

After checking the filter, see if air is moving.

Ask:

  • Do you feel air coming from the supply registers?
  • Does the airflow feel normal or weak?
  • Does the air feel cold, cool, warm, or room temperature?
  • Do you hear air moving through the return grille?
  • Are any rooms getting little to no airflow?

This information is useful when you call an HVAC contractor. It helps narrow down whether the indoor blower is running and whether the system is moving air.

Check the Outdoor Unit if It Is Accessible

If your unit is on the ground, you can safely observe it from the outside. Do not open panels or touch electrical parts.

Look and listen.

Ask:

  • Is the outdoor fan spinning?
  • Is air blowing out of the top of the condenser?
  • Does the unit sound normal?
  • Does it sound quieter than usual?
  • Do you hear the compressor humming?
  • Is the air coming out of the outdoor unit warm or hot?
  • Is the larger insulated copper line cold?

A working compressor usually has a distinct hum that many homeowners can recognize. If the unit is running but sounds quieter than usual, there is a chance the compressor is not running.

If the outdoor unit is on the roof, do not climb up unless you can do so safely and are comfortable. You can often listen from the yard or another safe area.

When to Shut the AC Off

If the indoor temperature is going up while the AC is running, that is a clear sign something may be wrong.

In that situation, it is usually best to shut the system off and call for service. You may be able to set the fan to “on” while waiting for a technician, especially if the system may be frozen and needs airflow to help thaw the coil.

Do not keep forcing a failing system to run.

If the system keeps trying to energize a bad component, you may turn a smaller repair into a bigger one. A weak motor, bad capacitor, frozen coil, or failing compressor can become more expensive if the system keeps running under the wrong conditions.

Airflow Problems Are Common in Phoenix and Scottsdale

Airflow is critical to any properly working AC system.

But here is the honest part: an AC running all day but not cooling does not always mean an airflow problem. Any restricted airflow situation can turn into a no-cool call, but not every no-cool call is caused by poor airflow.

Still, airflow is one of the biggest problems we see in the Valley.

Dirty filters are a major issue. So are restrictive filters. Many homeowners in Phoenix and Scottsdale use high-MERV pleated filters that their ductwork was never designed to handle. Once those filters get dirty, airflow drops even more.

Then the problems compound.

A system may already have undersized ductwork. Then the filter gets clogged. Then the evaporator coil gets dirty. Then the blower wheel gets impacted with dust. Now the system cannot breathe.

That can lead to freeze-ups, long run times, poor comfort, high utility bills, and equipment failure.

In Arizona, many technicians jokingly call this “The Land of No Return” because so many homes lack proper return air. A lot of HVAC replacements in the Valley are treated like a box swap. The contractor replaces the unit on the roof or in the attic, but never looks at whether the ductwork and return air can actually support the new system.

That is a problem.

You cannot expect a system to perform correctly if it cannot move the air it was designed to move.

Dirty Condenser Coils Reduce Heat Rejection

The condenser coil has one main job: reject heat.

Your AC absorbs heat from inside the home through the evaporator coil. That heat is then carried outside and rejected through the condenser coil.

If the condenser coil is dirty, the system cannot reject heat properly.

A dusty coil may only cause a small loss of efficiency and capacity. But a clogged condenser coil full of dirt, pet hair, leaves, or landscaping debris can become a real no-cooling problem.

A badly restricted condenser coil can cause:

  • Long run times
  • Poor cooling
  • High head pressure
  • Overheating components
  • Tripped safeties
  • Compressor stress
  • Higher utility bills
  • System shutdowns

Phoenix dust makes this worse. So do pets, landscaping debris, cottonwood, roof debris, and blocked airflow around the unit.

If you use Desert Comfort Mechanical for a pre-season AC inspection, we rinse the condenser coil with a hose when the equipment is accessible and water is available. Homeowners can also rinse an accessible ground-level condenser periodically with a garden hose, as long as they are careful and do not damage the coil.

Sometimes a coil is too dirty for water alone. In those cases, chemical cleaning may be needed. But chemicals can be harsh on AC coils and must be rinsed thoroughly. We only use chemical coil cleaners when they are truly necessary.

Low Refrigerant Usually Means a Bigger Problem

Low refrigerant is not usually a small issue.

Your AC system has a sealed refrigerant circuit. If it is low on refrigerant, that usually means there is a leak somewhere.

Some leaks are easy to find. Others are not. Some are repairable. Others are buried in a coil or located in a place where repair does not make financial sense.

This is why “just add Freon” is not always the right answer.

Adding refrigerant may temporarily restore cooling, but if the leak is still there, the system will lose charge again. And depending on the age of the system, the refrigerant type, the leak location, and the cost of repair, it may or may not be worth investing in.

With R-410A systems, the refrigerant oils are very moisture-absorbent. Once a sealed system is compromised, the repair can get expensive. Even when repaired properly with nitrogen, evacuation, and a new filter drier, the system has still been opened and compromised.

At Desert Comfort Mechanical, our first recommendation depends on the situation. In some cases, topping off the charge and adding a leak sealant additive may be a reasonable first step. If the system loses charge again, a leak search may be needed.

In other cases, based on the age of the system, refrigerant type, and likely repair cost, we may not recommend a leak search at all. Replacement may make more sense.

That is not because we want to sell equipment. It is because some refrigerant repairs do not make sense as a long-term investment.

Frozen Evaporator Coils Can Cause Long Run Times

A frozen evaporator coil can also make your AC run all day without cooling properly.

When the coil freezes, air cannot pass through it the way it should. The system may keep running, but the cooling performance drops hard. You may notice weak airflow, warmer air from the vents, water around the unit after thawing, or ice on the larger insulated copper line.

Common causes of a frozen coil include:

  • Dirty air filter
  • Restrictive filter
  • Dirty evaporator coil
  • Weak blower motor
  • Poor return air
  • Low refrigerant
  • Refrigerant restriction
  • Thermostat or control issue

If you see ice on the copper line or suspect the coil is frozen, shut the cooling off. Do not keep running it in cooling mode. Set the fan to “on” if appropriate and call for service.

The coil needs to thaw before a proper diagnosis can be completed.

Ductwork, Return Air, and Insulation Matter

Not every cooling problem is caused by the AC unit itself.

Ductwork, return air, insulation, attic heat, and system sizing all matter. But they usually create long-term comfort problems, not sudden failures.

Poor insulation does not usually disappear overnight. Undersized ductwork does not suddenly become undersized. A system that was too small from day one has probably always struggled.

So if your AC used to cool fine and now it does not, we usually look for a current equipment problem first.

But if your home has always had hot rooms, weak airflow, long run times, or trouble cooling during summer, then the ductwork and building conditions need to be considered.

Proper attic insulation is critical in Phoenix. Without it, heat gain through the ceiling can be too high for even a properly sized system to keep up.

Ductwork also has to be sized and installed correctly. If you look in your attic and the ductwork looks like a bowl of spaghetti, that is usually a bad sign. Ducts should be stretched properly, supported properly, and routed efficiently. They should not be kinked, crushed, twisted, or randomly run all over the attic.

You should usually see proper plenum boxes with takeoffs coming from the plenum. The system needs enough return air and enough supply capacity to move the airflow the equipment requires.

A 5-ton unit should usually have more than one air filter or return path. If you have a unit larger than 3 tons and only one 20×30 filter grille, that is often a sign the ductwork or return air could use improvement.

Good ductwork helps the AC last longer, improves comfort, lowers restriction, improves efficiency, and helps fix rooms that are always too hot.

Case Study: Bigger Was Not the Answer

We had a customer call us for an inspection and a quote for new equipment. His main complaint was that the AC could not cool the house low enough for his comfort.

He thought he needed a larger system.

That is a common assumption. Bigger must be better, right?

Not always.

During our inspection, we found several problems. The customer was using Filtrete MERV 13 pleated filters, and they were fully impacted and clogged. The indoor coil looked like a piece of shag carpet was laying across it. The blower motor and blower wheel were also severely impacted.

The ductwork was also undersized.

The home had a 5-ton packaged heat pump capable of moving around 2,000 CFM of air. But the house was built closer to 3-ton airflow standards. The return duct was an 18-inch flex duct that could only handle about 1,300 CFM. There was also only one 20×30 filter behind a stamped-face filter grille.

The system could not breathe.

Instead of replacing the equipment, we recommended cleaning the system and improving the ductwork. We added another 14-inch return on the warm side of the house. This allowed the unit to pull in the airflow it needed. We also balanced the outlet side to make sure the supply ductwork could handle the full airflow.

After the cleaning and duct upgrade, the customer described the difference as night and day. The system was much quieter because it could finally breathe. He also told us that 77 degrees became his new 74 degrees.

That is the power of proper airflow.

The equipment was not the main problem. The system was dirty, restricted, and starved for return air.

We also upgraded his filters to custom Tri-Dek filters that perform well without the same airflow restriction as heavily pleated high-MERV filters.

This is why Desert Comfort Mechanical evaluates ductwork before AC replacement. If the ductwork is not right for the new system, we will tell you. We do not install new units on bad ductwork just to collect a check.

Plenty of contractors in the Valley will replace the box on the roof and move on.

We are not that contractor.

We would rather pass on a project than install it poorly.

Should Your AC Keep Up During Extreme Phoenix Heat?

Yes, a properly working and properly sized AC system should be able to maintain temperature during extreme heat.

But there is a difference between maintaining temperature and recovering from a huge temperature swing.

If your thermostat has been set to 75 degrees and the system has been holding that temperature, the AC is only trying to maintain. That is much more achievable.

But if one side of the house was turned off, the indoor temperature climbed to 87 degrees, and then you set the thermostat to 62 degrees, do not expect the system to recover like a car AC.

Home AC systems are not designed to instantly pull a hot house down by 20 degrees in extreme outdoor heat.

Setting the thermostat lower does not make it cool faster. It only tells the system to keep running until it reaches that number.

During peak Phoenix summer heat, expect longer run times. That can be normal. But if the thermostat temperature is climbing while the system is running, that is a strong sign something is wrong.

Normal Long Run Time vs. Something Is Wrong

Long run times are normal during extreme heat.

But these signs are not normal:

  • The thermostat temperature keeps rising.
  • Air from the vents feels warm or room temperature.
  • The outdoor unit is running but sounds quieter than normal.
  • The outdoor fan is not spinning.
  • The larger insulated copper line is not cold.
  • Ice is forming on the copper line.
  • Airflow from the vents is weak.
  • The system keeps shutting off and restarting.
  • The breaker trips.
  • The drain safety switch trips.
  • The home never reaches temperature, even overnight.

If you notice these signs, call for AC service.

Do not keep forcing the system to run if it is clearly not cooling.

What Information to Gather Before Calling

The more information you can give the call taker, the better.

Before calling an AC repair company, try to gather:

  • How long the issue has been happening
  • Whether it is constant or intermittent
  • When you notice it most
  • What temperature the thermostat is set to
  • What temperature the home is currently at
  • Whether the system normally cools well
  • Whether air is moving from the vents
  • Whether the outdoor unit is running
  • Whether the outdoor fan is spinning
  • Whether the system sounds normal
  • Whether you changed the filter
  • Whether the larger copper line feels cold
  • Any thermostat alerts or error messages
  • Any troubleshooting you already tried

This helps us understand what you are experiencing before we arrive. It can also help us determine whether you truly need service right away or whether there is something simple we can walk you through over the phone.
